How Do You Read The Production Code On So Delicious’ Ice Cream Products?

For our frozen desserts, we use a Julian date calendar, which has a 5-digit code printed directly on the bottom or side of the container that indicates the date the product was made (View a visual guide to the location of the date codes on our products). The first two digits represent the year, and the last three digits represent the day of that year. For example, a date code of 13250 would mean that the product was made on the 250th day of 2013 (which would be September 7, 2013). If properly stored at an appropriate temperature, our frozen desserts are best consumed within two years of the date printed on the container. Our other products all have a “Use By” date printed on the carton letting you know the date you’ll need to finish consuming that product in order to guarantee the highest quality and freshness.

Is There Wheat Or Corn In The Natural Flavors Used In So Delicious Products?

We purchase our natural flavors from only a handful of companies with whom we have developed a trusted relationship, and we strive to use no corn-based constituents in our ingredients or finished products.  Our natural flavors come from botanicals and extracts from sources that can be comprised of many or just a few compounds that are extracted exclusively from plants, fruits, and beans. So for example, our vanilla flavor comes from the extract of vanilla beans. While the alcohol used in our vanilla extracts is made from corn, wheat or cassava, they are considered non-allergenic due to the fact that they contain no proteins.

Most of our ingredient vendor’s formulas are considered proprietary information, but we receive Letters of Continuing Guarantee stating that all flavor compounds are approved for use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Does So Delicious Use MSG in its ‘Natural Flavors’?

Some companies use monosodium glutamate, or MSG, in their products as a flavor enhancer Companies will even try to sneak MSG into products by labeling it as yeast, yeast extract, or autolyzed yeast. You’ll be glad to know that we do not use any ingredients that have MSG added, no matter which name it goes by. The presence of MSG is reviewed as part of an in-depth risk analysis before any ingredient is approved for use in our products.

Are There GMO’s (Genetically Modified Organisms) In So Delicious Products?

Why Does My Store Only Carry a Few Flavors of So Delicious Dairy Free?

In most grocery stores (especially smaller natural foods stores), shelf space is very tight, and the managers and employees at these stores have a tough job trying to fit all the products that people want into that limited space. But you can make a difference! Next time you’re shopping, find the appropriate department manager (frozen foods section for our frozen desserts, the dairy manager for cultured products, refrigerated dairy-free milks and creamers, and the grocery department manager for shelf-stable beverages and creamers) or ask for the store manager and let them know that you’d like to see a larger selection of So Delicious Dairy Free products. You can even print off a handy product request form to request specific products! Be sure to tell your friends to ask for us as well, because stores are often very responsive when they are getting multiple requests.

Why Do So Delicious Products Cost More Than Some Other Similar Products?

We use only the highest quality, most premium ingredients on the market. We aren’t willing to sacrifice the quality of our products or source from vendors that don’t align with our values as a company. One of the pillars of our company is "So Kind." This means treating people, animals, and the planet with kindness, and we operate with that spirit every day. We do this by selecting high-quality, cruelty-free ingredients for our delicious products, sourcing from vendors with integrity, and ensuring we are respectful and fair with all of our suppliers. Our products are always 100% plant and mineral based, with no artificial sweeteners, trans-fats, or hydrogenated oils. We use organic coconuts that are Non-GMO Project Verified in all of our coconut milk products, and we always source organic verified soybeans (which means non-GMO) for use in our soy-based products. It is a fine balance to create foods that are fully organic and affordable.

Furthermore, it’s not a fair comparison to look at the cost of dairy-free products against their dairy-based counterparts. This is because the dairy industry receives incredibly generous subsidies from the Federal Government. According to the Environmental Working Group and a recent article that was published in the Washington Post, the dairy industry received more than $5.3 billion from 1995-2012, the most recent years that the figures were available. The simple truth is that without such a tremendous amount of taxpayer money propping up the industry, the cost of dairy products would skyrocket.

For us personally, we’re willing to pay a little extra at the checkout line in order to purchase incredibly tasty foods that align with our values. The health, environmental, and social impacts of our food choices is well worth every penny, and we hope most of our fans feel the same way.

Why and How Does So Delicious Make Shelf Stable Products? Do They Need to be Refrigerated?

Packaging technology for shelf stable cartons allows the product to remain in an airtight container prior to opening, so the product has a much longer shelf life and does not have to be refrigerated until after it’s opened. This can be beneficial for many reasons. First of all, because shelf space is so limited (especially in the refrigerated sections) in stores, aseptic beverage containers are very convenient for grocers. Their smaller size and ability to be stored for long periods of time without needing refrigeration means that more stores can carry a wider variety of dairy-free beverages. Their more compact size means that not only do they fit better on store shelves, but also allows for these products to be shipped to more remote areas without the need for constant refrigeration.

It’s important to note that products packaged in shelf-stable containers are identical to their refrigerated counterparts. Our aseptic products are not more processed, and do not contain any special preservatives or chemicals. They’re simply packaged differently. Once the aseptic beverage containers have been opened, they have the same shelf life as their refrigerated counterparts (For optimum freshness, we recommend that our beverages be consumed within 7 to 10 days after opening). If unopened, we recommend they be stored properly and consumed before the "Use By" date View a visual guide to the location of the date codes on our products. Aseptic packages need to be refrigerated once opened. If you are unsure how long one of our products has been open in your refrigerator, please let your eyes, nose, and tastebuds guide you.

All of our packaging is free of BPA and pthalates and is made from materials that do not have an impact on the product. In addition, all of the packaging materials are recyclable. The aseptic (made by Tetra Pak) cartons are composed of nine layers of paper with a layer of aluminum that is easily separated and also recycled. There is a poly barrier between the aluminum and the product, so the aluminum does not directly touch the product. Please check to see if aseptic packaging is recycled in your community.

What’s The Difference Between So Delicious’ Culinary Coconut Milk and the Stuff that Comes in a Can?

The package is re-sealable, which is really nice for when you don't use the entire amount of product at once. Ours is fresher and doesn't have any metallic taste from sitting in a can. Ours is actually denser than the kind that comes in a can, so you can use 11oz. of ours as an equivalent to the 14oz. cans. Ours is certified organic and GMO-free, and our packaging uses 1/2 the energy to produce compared to metal cans, producing only 1/3 as much solid waste vs. a 14oz. can. Can I Cook and Bake With So Delicious Dairy Free Products?

Instant Pudding – Why Doesn’t It Thicken When I Use So Delicious Products?

Most instant puddings use tetrasodium pyrophosphate and disodium phosphate as thickening agents. Tetrasodium pyrophosphate encourages casein proteins in milk to group together and join with calcium to form into long chains. Those chains bind together and trap water between them, causing the pudding to thicken. Beverages like So Delicious Dairy Free Coconut Milk or Almond Plus do not contain these dairy proteins, so the reaction cannot occur. But we think it's worth the little bit of extra effort to make stovetop pudding! Here are a few delicious recipes you can try:

How Long Are So Delicious Products Good After Opening?

Although you should figure 7 to 10 days for optimum freshness, you can probably improve the refrigerated life of your So Delicious Coconut Milk if you control your fridge temperature. For just a few dollars, you can buy a thermometer for your fridge/freezer. Optimum temp is 37°F to 38°F for the fridge and 0°F to -2°F for the freezer. Much above that in the fridge and the life of the product will diminish. In that range, you should get 10 days or more. If you know you aren't going to use it quickly, try buying the shelf-stable quarts, and when you get close to the 10 day mark, if you have any left, freeze in ice cube trays to add to smoothies (we don't recommend freezing for other purposes, but it's perfect for this)! Can You Freeze So Delicious Beverages Or Creamers?

We don’t recommend that you freeze our beverages or creamers, as doing so can cause the ingredients to separate, adversely affecting the smooth, creamy texture you’ve come to know and love from our products. However, some of our fans are fond of pouring the beverage into ice cube trays and freezing it in order to add to smoothies later.

Are So Delicious Dairy Free Products Pasteurized or Raw?

All of our products are pasteurized for best microbial practices. The coconut milk we use is pasteurized.  Unlike meals you prepare at home, we are producing products on a very large scale and they have to remain free from spoilage and pathogenic levels of microbes for several weeks or even months, so pasteurization is a necessity.

The pasteurization temperatures and times vary depending on the product.  For our cultured coconut milk, cultured almond milk and frozen dessert, the products undergo a High Temperature Short Time (HTST) process, roughly 180°F for about 4 minutes.  For our beverages and creamers, they undergo an Ultra High Temperature (UHT) process, about 295°F for 1.9 seconds.  Higher temperatures have more of an effect on microbes than they do on the integrity of the food, so using higher temperatures allows for shortening the amount of time held at that temperature so it has less effect on the food.

Why Don’t So Delicious Dairy Free Products Taste Like Coconut?

We deliberately created our coconut milk products to have a mild flavor, which makes them very versatile replacements for dairy milk. It works well in cereal, smoothies, and recipes, because it compliments flavors without overpowering.

Is So Delicious’ Packaging Recyclable?

We strive to use recyclable packaging whenever possible. Our refrigerated cartons have a non-paraffin wax coating, and are recycled all over the world. The Tetra Pak cartons are made of 9 layers of paper with a layer of aluminum that is easily separated and also recycled. There is a poly barrier between the aluminum and the product so the aluminum does not directly touch the product. Unfortunately, we’re not able to sell or ship our products directly to consumers at this time. There are, however, some online retailers that sell our products, but due to the difficulty and high cost of storing and shipping refrigerated and frozen products, these retailers only sell our shelf stable beverages and creamers. Agave Syrup – Why Is It Used? Is So Delicious Removing it From Their Products?

We have recently made a change to our coconut milk frozen desserts. Fan comments are very important to us, and we received a lot of feedback requesting that we replace agave with another natural sweetener.  We try to use organic ingredients whenever possible, and we were very pleased to be able to replace the agave with organic dried cane syrup, and the results truly taste so delicious! Keep your eyes peeled, as the new versions of our frozen desserts are already rolling into stores. However, because frozen desserts have a very long shelf life if properly stored, you might still find our agave-sweetened products at your local store. That’s why it’s so important to always read the label for an accurate list of ingredients.  

The previous version of our frozen desserts contains organic agave syrup, which is made from organically grown agave plants. Agave nectar is a natural sweetener that boasts a low glycemic index, 14 compared to 62 for sucrose and 64 for High Fructose Corn Syrup, making it an excellent choice for those trying to avoid the energy spikes and crashes that often accompany other sweeteners. Many sweeteners on the market are designer foods – meaning they are designed in a laboratory with chemical additives and GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) so they will mimic sugar. Agave is NOT a designer food.  It is a simple food – just like maple syrup. Maple syrup comes from maple tree sap.  Agave nectar comes from the agave plant. As a natural plant-based food, agave nectar contains no gluten, nuts or dairy. It is also vegan and kosher. And because agave nectar is 1.4 times sweeter than sugar, we can use less of it.

Another benefit to using agave is that the plant is truly remarkable. It grows in the harshest of environments with little water and minimal upkeep. It is naturally grown in the American southwest and Mexico and requires no pesticides or fertilizers. The agave plant is grown for 6-8 years, then before turning to seed, it is harvested by hand. The agave harvesters go into the fields and remove the “pina” or heart of the agave plant by cutting the long spiny “leaves” with a sharp blade. The trimmings are left to compost and enrich the soil for the new saplings, and the wonderful sustainable cycle continues.

We believe that all sweeteners should be consumed in moderation, and that desserts ought not be the centerpiece of anyone's diet. The Product I Purchased Has Ice Crystals Like It Had Been Freezer Burned. What Caused This?

This is the result of what we call “temperature abuse.”  This happens when an ice cream melts and is refrozen, sometimes more than once. We maintain strict temperature control over our products while they are at our manufacturing facility, but after our products are shipped, we have limited control over how they are treated. Shipping companies, distributors, and retail stores may not take as good care of our products as we wish and sometimes they allow the ice cream to thaw before placing it in a freezer or refrigerated storage environment. If this has happened to the product you purchased, we suggest taking it back to the store from where it was purchased and requesting a replacement or a refund.

Are So Delicious Dairy Free Products Kosher?

The CK symbol on each So Delicious Dairy Free package means that we are supervised by Kehilla Kosher of Los Angeles, California. Kehilla is an internationally recognized kosher certifier operating under strict Kosher standards. However, our products are not Passover certified. How Does So Delicious Dairy Free Source its Palm Oil?

We’re committed to sustainable sourcing practices, and because we’re also concerned about the state of global palm oil production, we’d like to share what we are doing to help minimize our impact on sensitive ecosystems. First, we’re happy to say that we’ve phased out the use of palm oil in our dark chocolate bar coating by reformulating with coconut oil. Coconut plantations are well established in SE Asia and are not linked to deforestation, as farmers simply plant more palms on the same acreage when the older palms lose their productivity (after approximately 50 years).
We are committed to creating our foods with care, consideration and kindness for all creatures. Although the vendor who supplies our ice cream sandwich wafers still uses organic palm oil because of the superior physical properties of this oil compared to potential replacements, they do not buy their palm oil from Malaysia or Indonesia, where the majority of the deforestation and habitat destruction is taking place (they source from Colombia and Brazil). The nutritional information on the packaging is different than what’s on the website. Why is that? Which one is right?

We pride ourselves on listening to the wants and needs of our wonderful fans and are committed to offering only the highest quality, best tasting products available on the market. We also strive to keep our products affordable, so we’re constantly evaluating our products and the ingredients used in creating them in order to deliver the best value to our customers. It’s for these reasons that we reformulate our products from time-to-time, resulting in a need for new nutrition labels, and thus, new packaging designs. When these packaging changes occur, we update the information on our website right away, even though there is still some of the older product still out on store shelves. Because So Delicious Dairy Free products are not sold directly to consumers, there is a period of time when new packaging has been created to reflect new formulations, but the new versions products and their updated packaging takes a bit of time to roll out into stores. Because of how complicated this process can be, it’s vitally important that you make sure to carefully read nutrition labels. We take the safety of our products and the integrity of our ingredients very seriously, and what you see printed on the packaging in your hands is what’s inside the carton. Are So Delicious Products Gluten-Free?

Many of our products are gluten-free and wheat-free. In fact, we make the world’s only gluten-free, dairy-free cookie dough frozen dessert, and also offer gluten-free Cookies ‘N Cream flavors! Most of our frozen desserts, and all of our milk beverages and cultured products are gluten-free. Check out this complete list of our gluten-free products.

There is wheat flour in the wafers that are used to make our ice cream sandwiches and in the brownies that are included in the brownie flavors of our frozen desserts (all of our products that DO contain gluten also contain wheat). Any of our products that are gluten free are also wheat free. Keep in mind that we test for the presence of gluten in all of our products that are declared gluten-free. In fact, our gluten allergen test is four times more sensitive than the FDA’s. We test to 5 parts per million, while the FDA only tests to 20 parts per million in order to declare a food gluten-free on the label.

Are So Delicious Products Organic?

We use organic coconuts that are non-GMO verified in all of our coconut milk products, and we always source organic verified soybeans (which means GMO free) for use in our soy-based products. We try whenever possible to use organic ingredients when they are available and don't elevate the price of our products. It is a fine balance to create foods that are fully organic and affordable, and we are working in that direction as much as we can. There are some ingredients that present challenges for us. For example, currently, organic blueberries would increase the price of the product fairly significantly. We appreciate your feedback, as we always want to know what is important to you. We continue to look for organic suppliers who may be able to help us achieve our organic goals without raising costs for you.

What Cultures Are Used to Make So Delicious’ Cultured Products? Are They Sourced From Dairy?

The live cultures in our cultured products are L. Bulgaricus, S. Thermophilus, L. Rhamnosus, L. Acidophilus, Bif. Bifidum, and Bif. Animalis. These are the same general strains used in dairy-based yogurts and have the same probiotic effect, but do not come from dairy-based sources. Because all of our products are certified vegan, our cultures are grown on a plant-based medium. This means that the cultures in our cultured coconut milk products are grown on – that’s right; you guessed it – organic, Non-GMO Project Verified coconuts! The cultures in our Cultured Almond Milk products are grown on Non-GMO Project Verified almonds.

Are the Probiotics Still Growing In The Cultured Coconut Milk at the End of the Shelf Life?

There are approximately 106 to 108 (pronounced “ten to the sixth to ten to the eighth”) organisms of live cultures per serving at the best by date for each yogurt flavor and type of cultured product.  In simple terms, this means that there are between 1,000,000 (one million) and 100,000,000 (one hundred million) live probiotic organisms per serving in our products up until the “Use By” date printed on each container of cultured product.

What is Titanium Dioxide, and Why Is It Used in So Delicious’ Coffee Creamers?

Titanium Dioxide is a naturally occurring, insoluble, and inert mineral in the Earth’s crust. Its crystalline geometry enables it to reflect light many times over, making it the whitest substance known. This makes it ideal for imparting whiteness to products, which is why we use a small amount in our Coconut Milk Creamers.

Both the Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA), a committee comprised from members of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO), and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) have concluded that there is no absorption or tissue storage of titanium dioxide and it is not absorbed via the gastrointestinal tract, thus these two bodies, as well as Europe’s Scientific Committee on Food (SCF), each have concluded that there are no safety concerns associated with the use of titanium dioxide as a food additive at levels ranging up to three percent. Our products stay within US regulations that limit its use to no more than one percent. Titanium dioxide is not carcinogenic when ingested.

What is Alcohol / Ethyl Alcohol?

Some of our products contain flavors that include of a small amount of ethyl alcohol as a carrier. The amount of ethanol in these products is so small that there is no physiological impact. There is no gluten in the alcohol.

Alkali and So Delicious Products

The cocoa in our products can be processed with an alkaline ingredient to balance out the pH (which lowers the acidity). This makes the chocolate richer in taste and gives it a deeper chocolaty color. When the cocoa nib is subjected to alkalization it increases the pH and color reactions occur. Alkalization is halted when the proper flavor/color balance is achieved.

Does SO Delicious Use Any Artificial Colors, Flavors, or Sweeteners?

None of our products contain artificial colors, flavors, or sweeteners either as direct ingredients or sub-ingredients.

Do So Delicious Dairy-Free Products Contain Preservatives (such as BHA, BHT, or TBHQ)?

We don’t use chemical preservatives in our products–either as direct ingredients or sub-ingredients–so none of our products contain BHA (Butylated Hydroxyanisole), BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene), or TBHQ (Tert-Butylhydroquinone).

Is So Delicious Dairy Free Going to Stop Using Carrageenan?

Some of our products contain carrageenan, a natural polysaccharide – or carbohydrate – that’s extracted from a specific type of red seaweed that’s very common in the Atlantic ocean. The seaweed is boiled to help extract the carrageenan, which is a gum-like substance that’s been used on a huge scale worldwide in food production since the 1930s.

The governing bodies responsible for food safety and the scientific health studies overwhelmingly conclude that carrageenan is safe. Despite this, our fans still voiced concerns over the ingredient, so our team decided to proactively look for alternate solutions. So Delicious Dairy Free is dedicated to selecting top quality ingredients that meet our stringent purity and allergen-free requirements, and we’re passionate about delivering delicious dairy-free options to kitchen tables across the country.

For the past two years now, we’ve been working very hard on reformulating our coconut milk beverage line to remove carrageenan. Our new recipe for carrageenan-free coconut milk has just been completed, a milestone in a process that’s certainly been a labor of love for our team. We have been working tirelessly on this for nearly two years. It isn’t easy work to recreate recipes or produce them on a large scale, but we are really proud of the end result and hope you will be too. We have shared samples with fans, retailers and influencers over the past few months and heard great feedback on the taste and creaminess.

You will first find our new carrageenan-free coconut milk beverages in the half-gallon cartons in the refrigerated section of the grocery store, and then it will roll out to the shelf stable sections nationwide. Back at our offices, we will continue moving through our product line to remove carrageenan from our other products. Our goal is to offer a complete line of dairy-free products that are all carrageenan free. Just so you know, we already have many products that do not contain carrageenan.

Do So Delicious Dairy Free Products Contain Casein?

Casein is a milk derivative and a very common allergen. Because all of our products are always 100 percent plant-based and certified vegan, none of our products contain casein in any form.

Is There Cholesterol in So Delicious Dairy Free Products?

Dietary cholesterol exclusively comes from animal-derived products. Because all of our products are always 100 percent plant-based and certified vegan and never contain any animal products or byproducts, our products do not contain any cholesterol.

Is There Dextrose in So Delicious Dairy Free Products?

Some of our products contain dextrose, which is derived from tapioca, a starch from the cassava plant.

Do So Delicious Dairy Free Products Contain Any Eggs?

None of our products contain eggs or egg constituents. In fact, all of our products are always 100 percent plant-based and certified vegan and never contain any animal products or byproducts.

What is Erythritol, and Why is it in Some of So Delicious Dairy Free’s Products?

Some of our products contain erythritol, a naturally derived sugar substitute produced from the fermentation of carbohydrates. The product we are using is derived from non-GM corn, and is Non-GMO Project Verified. Even though erythritol is absorbed, it is 95% less caloric than other carbohydrates because most of it is not metabolized. Erythritol is about 70 percent as sweet as sucrose and does not affect blood sugar levels. It also does not promote tooth decay, because it is not metabolized by oral bacteria. Erythritol is an FDA Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) approved ingredient for use as a sugar substitute and also approved by the USDA National Organic Program for inclusion in Organic products. Erythritol is also easily digested by most people.

While our Sugar-free Coconut Milk Beverages are sweetened with stevia, we found that erythritol and monk fruit were much better natural sweetening choices for our non-dairy frozen desserts. We tried stevia as part of the sweetener system, but its aftertaste was too strong. Also, the erythritol is not just there for the purpose of sweetening. Ice cream products tend to have an undesirable icy “mouth feel” if they don't have enough solid ingredients. What is Monk Fruit, and Why is it Used in So Delicious’ Products?

Monk Fruit (also called Luo Han Melon) is grown in mountainous regions of Asia and has been used in traditional Asian medicine as a sugar substitute for diabetics and to treat constipation and heat stroke induced aphonia and chronic cough. The intense sweetness of the fruit comes from a compound called “Mogroside V.” Mogroside V is roughly 150 times as sweet as table sugar depending on the application. Mogroside V is extracted from the fruit via hot water extraction followed by spray drying. There is no use of chemicals or solvents other than water. Mogroside V can be added to foods on a parts per million basis to replace some or all of the sugar that might otherwise be added to the food. The Monk Fruit extract used in So Delicious® products is produced in a facility that has kosher, ISO22000 and HACCP certification and is tested to ensure that the product meets all specifications to ensure there is no contamination or adulteration.
